Tibradden Hill & Fairy Castle – Family hike

Kids go free! This is one of our Christmas week  family friendly hikes, they are generally of a shorter distance and over easier ground, such as tracks and easy paths.

Starting at the forest car park at the ‘Zippit’ outdoor attraction at the base of Tibradden hill, we climb steadily up the forest track to the open hillside and onto the neolithic tomb at the summit. From here, (weather permitting), we can follow the trail to the summit of Fairy castle, another larger passage tomb, before retracing our steps to the start.

About Tibradden Hill & Fairy Castle guided day hike in the Dublin Hills

The hike starts on the edge of the Dublin Mountains, at Tibradden Hill, where we walk up through the forest on a well made track and onto open hillside to reach the ancient passage tomb at the top of the hill, as we ascend we will get fine views across Dublin to Howth Head and the coast, and on a fine day can see as far as the Mourne Mountains to the north. We continue to the Wicklow Way, a good mountain path, and as we approach Fairy Castle there are far reaching views of the Wicklow mountains to the south.

Fairy Castle is a Bronze Age cairn on the summit of Two Rock mountain, dating from 2000 – 2500BC, it has never been excavated but is known to be a collapsed passage tomb. The original cairn is now topped by a much more recent one and the top of our climb. From here we retrace our steps back to the start. The hike takes around 4.0 hours, but can be shortened as time and weather dictates.
