The wilder side of Glendalough – day walk (Hard)

Derrybawn ridge to Corrig. Beginning in Glendalough (valley of the two lakes), we head up onto Derrybawn and follow the broad southern skyline over Mullacor, Lugduff and Corrig before dropping down to the valley floor. Descending to the zig-zags and the old lead miners village we return via the ancient monastic settlement of Glendalough, with its’ 30 metre high round tower.

About The Derrybawn Ridge to Corrig guided day hike in the Wicklow Hills

This hike begins at the Upper Lake in Glendalough. We follow a track uphill before taking a steeper hill path up to the summit of Derrybawn. From here we follow the undulating ridge to Mullacor and Lugduff, stopping for lunch where our route crosses the Wicklow Way. We continue following the broad ridge on a rough mountain path, enjoying some magnificent views of Lugnaquilla and the Glendalough and Glenmalure valleys.

Eventually we drop down over grass and heather to reach the river in the valley bottom. Here we may see Irish Hare, Sika deer, buzzards, skylarks or feral goats. We now follow the river downsteam through the wild upper Glendalough valley to cross a footbridge and join a rocky path to descend to the Miners village. This is an abandoned and long derelict lead mining area, where we can reflect on the life of these hardy people.

Please ensure you wear good mountain footwear as this route is rocky and slippery in places. You may be turned away by the guide if you arrive in runners.

EQUIPMENT

Good waterproof boots and waterproof clothing are essential – walking trousers are advised or comfortable athletic clothing, (no jeans please); spare warm layer; hat and gloves; lunch and/or snacks; water or juice drink, (1.5 litres); small rucksack to carry it all in.

Transport is not currently available from Dublin.

How to get to the start: To get to Glenmalure from Dublin take the N11 heading south. Get off at Kilmacanogue, (R775), and head for Roundwood . Go through Roundwood, then Annamoe and on to Laragh. . Carry on to Glendalough, which is well signposted, and park in the second, (pay) car park on the left, by the upper lake.
