About Brockagh Mountain, St. Kevin’s Way and Glendalough

This moderately graded Brockaghs guided hike follows the Wicklow Way through lovely woodland before ascending the grassy slopes of Brockagh mountain, with lovely all round views. After descending into the Glendasan valley the route then follows St. Kevin’s Way into Glendalough and the ancient monastic settlement with its’ round tower and small early cathedral.

The hike starts at the Glendalough visitor centre and follows part of the Wicklow way through pretty woods, gradually climbing and eventually opening out to give good views of the valleys below. Our path now heads uphill as we ascend first Brockagh East and then Brockagh, (556 metres), a broad hill of heather and granite boulders, from here we get wonderful views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

There is a good chance we will see some of the local hybrid Sika deer as we descend across open hillside to reach the old mine workings at North Hero before reaching the valley floor and the old pilgrim route of St. Kevin’s Way. We follow the path past more old workings and along the Glendasan river until we reach the ancient monastic settlement at Glendalough. The hike should take around 5 hours, and we will have time to explore the monastic settlement and take refreshments.
